An emergency lighting system is considered a “Life safety system”, and therefore required to be installed and be fully functioning. The purpose of an emergency lighting system is to allow safe egress from a building in the event of power failure or a fire situation andassist in the safe evacuation of people out of a building in an emergency. Emergency Lighting is provided for use when the normal mains supply fails and therefore must be powered from an independent source other than that which is supplying the normal lighting.
Another purpose of emergency lighting is to illuminate fire alarm panels, manual call points, fire extinguishers first aid equipment point of emphasis such as electrical distribution boards, steps/stairs and emergency exits must be readily identified.
